The Closely-Groomed Mustache
The expression on his face indicates to me that he is distressed at having such a mustache and wishing it could be fuller. Maybe his father is a barelipped tyrant and is threatening disinheritanceness.
His father is part of the problem. He owns a haberdashery. Unfortunately, the father hired Mordecai, an aloof and half-blind cousin, to be the tailor of his enterprise. As you can see from the poor chap seated, he's made a suit much too big! Look at the man's small head compared to the ballooning lapeled coat!
The gentleman's slightly raised right eyebrow combined with the darkly oblique distant gaze suggests, with grim foreboding, that his moustache will have its revenge - and soon.
